Women’s Retreat Reflection

The Women’s Retreat impacted so many. Here’s a reflection from the weekend by Janelle Hacault:

“The women’s retreat was a catalyst in bringing me back to where God is calling me. I feel that it came at the perfect time when I was open to God’s voice and He met me there. I LOVED connecting with the incredible women of our church. Wow, I was so encouraged by their vulnerability in sharing their stories, their bravery in reaching out to others, and their courage in trying new things.

I’m still blessed by the goodie bag that greeted me the day I arrived! As a tea-granny-at-heart, the china tea cup, chai tea and the personal note of love really set the tone for me.

The prayer tent was fantastic and reminded me how powerful prayer is and how much I love intercessory prayer. Having so much free time was a huge huge huge thing for me. Our lives are so overstimulated, bombarded, and busy that having the time and space to just be still in such a beautiful environment made all the difference.

The worship and everyone’s openness really blessed me. I can’t put into words how pivotal and precious the retreat was for me. I cannot believe it’s taken me 13 years to finally come! Oh my!

I just love our church!”

Project Timothy Prayer Requests

After a year of fundraising, the youth are finally heading out to Project Timothy! Below are a few prayer requests from Jodi Labun:

“Hey folks, nine of us this week are heading out to Landenberg, PA where Project Timothy (youth discipleship bootcamp) is being held from July 29-Aug 6.

Please pray for our youth as they prepare this week and as they go.  Please pray for smooth travels as this group is travelling by air on three different dates on the weekend beginning on Friday.  Pray for safety for James as he drives to and from the church and airport over the weekend.

Pray for our youth that the Lord will stir new things and move in ways in our youth that we can’t ask or imagine.  Pray that as they are immersed in this environment their love for the Lord would deepen, and the desire and invitation to head into what God has called them to would increase.  Pray that this wouldn’t just be an event, but it would be a space where transformation would happen as we are challenged to be great lovers of Jesus and others.

It’s breathtaking to be in an atmosphere where teens are hungry for God.  Thanks to all of you at WCV who have supported us on this adventure.  There’s been enormous financial support through our fundraising efforts;  for this we are so grateful.

Thanks for joining us in prayer over this next week,
~Jodi ~”

Spring Market Nepal Fundraising Report

The fundraising tables at the Third + Bird Spring Market were a huge success! All income combined from the Cookie Table, Raffle Table, and Nepal Goods Table are going towards a Nepali Women’s Co-op, specifically to tailoring schools that train women in the trade and to start their own businesses! Because of our fundraising efforts, two tailoring school were completed in the last six months in the Himalayan Regions.

Also, a huge thanks goes out to Third + Bird for their providing a platform for us to fundraise for the Nepali Women’s Co-op! Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to raise over $5, 000 at this most recent Spring Market! Thank you Third + Bird!

Community Art Gallery Initiative

This is an invitation to all artists of the WCV community. Beginning the month of May, Flatlanders Studio will have a continual Community Art Gallery rather than once per year. We would love to have our community artists take part and submit some of their art pieces to be displayed in the Flatlanders Art Space.

If you feel this is you, please fill out an art submission form! Or talk to Krista Heide or Vanessa Lewis for more details.

2015 Financial Results Update

We celebrate and worship the Lord for his continuing provision of all our financial needs.  In our 20th year  he has given us surplus funds in both our operating and 30% funds budget.

The generous and sacrificial gifts of all supporters have encouraged us all.  We accept this result with gratitude from the Lord and His people.

We exceeded our income budget by $4,000 and reduced our expenses significantly from estimates.  The resulting surplus of $14,000 will be used to finance cash flow deficits if they arise in 2016.  The 30% funds budget has a $2,200 surplus and will be carried forward for 2016 needs.

Thank you again to the entire WCV community for this outcome.  Please pray for wisdom for the Board of Directors and Staff as they set the budget for 2016.

2015 Financial Results

We are pleased to report that all our 2015 Financial commitments have been met and we ended the year with a surplus!

We acknowledge the reality and blessing of the LORD’S provision and the sacrificial giving of all of you who participate in and support WCV.  Also, thank you for joining us in prayer.  It was provided for – the Lord saw our need and responded!  It is truly His Kingdom work and He has been faithful in all our 20 years to provide for all our needs.  We praise and celebrate God for that.

The Board of Directors and Pastoral Staff are now working on the 2016 budget.

Christmas Eve Service

Every Christmas Eve, as other families across the world gather around a Christmas tree, we, as a church body, gather together to celebrate Christ’s birth. We remember and celebrate The One who Came by singing Christmas carols and lighting the last advent candle. This service is a candle lit service, where every family is welcome, and everyone will get their own individual candle.

We encourage you to come and celebrate with us as one body. But if you can’t make it, take a step back from the busyness of Christmas and remember the One, Jesus Christ, who came down as an infant child to dwell with us.

The service will be on Thursday, December 24th, 2015, 6:00 – 7 p.m.

Cookies for Nepal

Hi Everyone,

I was so moved by how a few people from our drop in community responded to making cookies for Nepal that I wanted to share it with you.

Gordon (aka “Blackie”) and Georgina came to all three cookie sessions.  They were so wonderful and engaged.  We worked hard for a good three hours each Friday.  These two told me that they have never made cookies before!  I don’t know if that’s true, communication is interesting, but I think it’s likely.  There’s something about this that shakes me a little.

Anyway, Kenny also came one week.  Kristin Dahl came the first week.  And Richard Sinclair came twice.  He only missed the last session because of a doctors appointment.

They worked really hard!  They also paid a dollar each time they came.  And they talked about how good it was to be able to do something to give to Nepal.  It was beautiful to me.

Another highlight: One of the requirements to attend was that you had to be sober.  The first week Blackie and Georgina told me that they were walking up Main in the morning and some friends had invited them to have a drink.  They said, “No.  We’re going to make cookies today.”  They came sober every week.

My heart could burst.

In the end, 200 cookies were made.  But I have a feeling this was about more than that.

Flatlanders Inn Update

For those of you who were not in the Downstairs Gathering last Sunday, this little update is for you.  There have been changes in Flatlanders Inn.

Tara

Tara

We want to welcome Tara Glowacki as our new Flatlanders Inn Administrator!  Tara began working on a part-time basis last week.  We’re excited for the passion, connection and expertise she brings to the position.  Welcome, Tara!

We have also had some changes to the Leadership Team.  Jeff & Amanda Leighton have been around a long time and are founding members.  Laura Dahl has recently finished a prospective Leader phase and we’re excited to have her as a full-on Leadership Team member!  Ian & Jessica Williams moved in a year ago to explore what living at Flatlanders was like.  Together, we’ve been feeling like they should be exploring what being leaders in Flatlanders looks like.  So we’ve invited them to be prospective Leadership team members.  This is a 6 month process which is meant to see if it’s a good fit for them.  Andy Wood is also on the Leadership team and provides pastoral oversight.

Kelly & Brendan Dvorak have recently moved out after having lived and led in the community for the last 5 years.  They’ve been a tremendous blessing in so many ways.  We sincerely thank them for all they’ve done and the ways they’ve opened their lives up to those who have called Flatlanders Inn home these past years.  While community living with people who are at risk of homelessness always has challenges, the past season has been more difficult than normal.  It’s a sad and hard departure.

On Sunday, we prayed for the current team.  They appreciated it and felt the love and support of the church family.  Thanks for that!

Shoal Lake 40 Freedom Road

Churches for Freedom Road is an affiliation of churches willing to demonstrate public support for the building of a 17 mile road from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation to the Trans-Canada Highway, thus ending their 100 year enforced isolation and making it possible for them to build a water treatment plant to end an 18 year boil-water advisory.

The building of the road needs the joint co-operation of three levels of government (Federal, Provincial and Civic). The Federal and Provincial Governments are preparing to have either funds or bankable commitments ready for when the road’s detailed design is complete in January, but the City of Winnipeg has yet to show initiative to commit.

Steve Bell has set up a new petition to apply “polite pressure” on the City to move forward on their previous commitment, and we’re inviting you to consider signing the petition.  This demonstrates strong public will to end what has been a century-long nightmare for our neighbours at Shoal Lake 40. This is not an acrimonious petition, rather a simple demonstration of support for fair relations between Winnipeg and Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.
