When the Church Seeks First the Kingdom

Here is an important message given by David Ruis at our National Gathering in Montreal this past summer. Situating us as a Vineyard movement in Canada in the context of where we’re coming from and where God is leading us. It’s an inspired talk. Please take the time to listen – especially in this time of shaking.

The end game was never to be signs and wonders. The end game was never to be the published song. The end game was to be “Jesus getting his church back.”

Zeus. Poseidon. Aphrodite. Mammon. Consumerism. Racism. Privilege. Abusive power. Lust. Rage. Insanity. Greed. The Lamb has disarmed you, making a public spectacle of you at the cross. We will not bow. We will not submit.

“The other really disarming thing for me was the current fruit of a Quaker branch, this capacity to wait. To rest. To not hype or coerce not only the work of the Spirit, but our engagement in the church. All of this impacted the worship. Not only the songs themselves, which reached for a level of intimacy and authenticity like I had never experienced but “why” the songs were not only sung, but set in this certain sacramental way full of expectation and hope, yet not afraid of an almost uncomfortable ease with the place of brokenness.

“Oh Lord, have mercy on me. And heal me.
Oh Lord, have mercy on me. And free me.
Place my feet upon a rock.
Put a new song in my heart. In my heart.
Oh Lord. Have mercy on me.”

We were to continue to grow up and into these aspects of “our lane.” Peter Davids, I think, nailed it in 2004.  We were not to camp here. The racial middle of 2018 is not perhaps the radical middle of 1987.”

You’re part of something that is in motion and will not stop in its violent commitment to reach, to dream, to prophetically embody and cooperate with, surrender to and engage in in the transforming power of this kingdom coming. This kingdom here.

Repent.

Think again.

Reach again.

Believe again.

Dream again.

The kingdom is upon us. It is here, now, and yet with still a whole lot more to come.

Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus. The Spirit and the Bride cry out. Creation groans. Can you hear the cries of the oppressed? The hurting? The dying? Those entangled by the power of their greed? Their need to consume? Their need to belong? To be something?

The endless cycle of the oppressor and the oppressed. The relentless whirlpool of wounding and revenge. The crippling disease of a consumerism that will never. Never. Be enough.

Come. Come all who thirst. Come all who bleed. Come out all who are hiding. Come all who long.

Messages of Love

Over the past few weeks many people have contacted WCV with messages of love, encouragement and assurance of prayer for all of us. Here are just a few we’d like to highlight for you now.

Joyce Rees (National Council Member and Pastor at Epic Vineyard in Kelowna)

The LORD is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18

“In all circumstances we look to the Lord, and our great comfort is that He is close, especially to those who are “crushed in spirit”. My encouragement is that you would keep turning toward Him. Speak honestly to Him. Many are praying, most hours of every day, that you would experience the Holy Spirit’s presence very near to you. We are sending you our love.”

David and Anita Ruis (Vineyard Canada National Directors)

“You are not alone.”

“Hey WCV family,

We just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know we love you and are walking beside you as you journey through this challenging time.

People coast to coast are holding you in prayer. We are coming alongside your team there with as much resourcing and support as we can muster.

You are not alone. We’re in this together. Be assured of our care and concern for everyone impacted, and our deep awareness of the wide range of emotions, reactions and triggers that such events bring to the surface. We are extremely proud of the way you are handling this.

Huge love and prayers.”

David and Anita, on behalf of your Vineyard Canada family.

And this week Provencher Community Church gifted us this painting that was created for our community during a recent worship service. It was delivered personally, with warmth and love. The back is signed, “Standing together with our Vineyard family.”

There are many more messages like this that will continue to be shared.

Kids Church Start Up

Our WCV Kids Church will resume next Sunday, September 16th. This Sunday’s service will continue to model our typical summer schedule. A video series is being shown in the Comfy Couch Room during the sermon as an option for the kids. Parents are asked to stay with their children if they are watching the video. All are welcome to remain in the service as well.

Update on our Retreats & Other Opportunities

In light of our current circumstance, we have, with sadness, cancelled our Men’s, Women’s, and Youth retreats this year. We are walking out this situation and responding to the needs of the congregation. We are creating more ways for the community to process, grieve, and connect that is more manageable and involves less planning than the retreats. Our next step in this process is as follows:

  • August 23rd, (tomorrow night)we will be having a Prayer Night, at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. We invite you to come, intercede for the church body, call out to God for mercy, wisdom and continued healing for all those affected.

Thank you for your love, understanding, and prayer for us.

If you have any ideas for connection, have any questions, or need to reach out to anyone, please contact the office.

Some Resources on Grief

Hey everyone,

Here are some resources on grief that were available on Sunday, August 19, 2018. They will also be available at church during our meetings this week:

The Open Care Night, August 21, 2018 at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. This will be a come-and-go evening that will have people ready and available to talk and pray, a quiet space in the sanctuary for prayer, and some resources on how to process this in a good way. We will also have suggestions on who to contact if you need professional counselling.

Prayer Night, August 23, 2018 at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. This will be an evening during which we gather together to call out to God for mercy, wisdom and healing for all involved. Be assured that so much prayer has already covered us, but we need to continue to turn to God in this time.

And lastly, if you need to talk about this, please reach out to any of the staff, elders or BOD members. If you don’t know who to reach out to, you can call Andy’s office phone at 204-582-2900 x13. The team will be organizing care from there.

Men’s Lake Getaway CANCELLED

2018 MENS GETAWAY ANNOUNCEMENT

We regret to advise that this year’s GETAWAY is being cancelled.

The Pastoral staff are dealing with recent developments within the church and find it impossible to give adequate time to this event in the next weeks.

We know that our times together are significant for all who come.

We will look forward to next year.

Thanks for your understanding,

John Rademaker

Serving Opportunities

Looking to serve? We are excited to start kids church in the fall but we are in need of leaders who are willing to love on our kids. Contact Jodi if you can be on a rotation to serve our younger ones.

Want to paint? Some of our kid’s church rooms are in need of some paint touch ups. Contact Jodi if you have experience in painting and have a few hours to serve in this way. Also a huge thank-you to the Miles Mac Key Club for a beautiful job of painting the Dragonflies room. Thanks to Joseph for organizing this!

Looking to help in a practical way? We are looking for a couple of servants who would be willing to clean our toys in three large areas of kids church. Contact Jodi if you have a few hours to serve in this way.

Community Campout Survey

Our annual WCV Community Campout has been a valued tradition for many years. These weekends provide a prolonged time of connection and fun for those who come. We’d love to see more people make it out so we are asking for a little feedback. Please help us by taking a moment to fill out the survey below. We want to hear from you![gravityform id=”23″ title=”true” description=”true”]

WCV Community Campout

About 40 of us made it out to our annual community campout over the long weekend. The weather was just right, the fire well tended, friendship was nurtured and the food kept flowing as we shared with one another. There is something special about being together like this – away from the busyness of city life. We welcomed in new friends and sat with old friends too. Some highlights this year included a C.S. Lewis read aloud around the fire, an entertaining game of Jenga and a delicious feast that was joyfully prepared by Bill and Katherine. In the middle of it all, one member of our community looked up and said, “People are so generous here.” It’s really true. Thank you to everyone who came out. You extended love to each other in such beautiful ways.

Cultivate: tending lives that produce good fruit

One of my family’s favourite outings is to pack all six of us into the van and head down to Corydon Ave. We all eagerly race into Nucci’s gelati for a tasty frozen treat – we run because usually it’s raining when we all go – a weird quirk of this particular family tradition. Walking into that little shop and seeing the array of vivid colours lined up side by side fills my heart with love and my tastebuds with anticipation. All those amazing flavours beckoning to be tasted (favourites include Pistachio, Mullberry, and Tartufo Bianco). One delicious frozen treat, many mouth-watering flavours.

When Paul speaks of the work of the spirit in our lives the language he uses is that of fruit. He famously lists what he calls the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. It’s not a complete list of the Spirit’s work in our lives (scholars agree) – how could the work of God be summed up in a simple list?! However, he is clear that all these various fruit are rooted in one kind of fruit… kind of like a whole bunch of delicious flavours of gelati but it’s all one type of desert. Many flavours – one fruit. The Passion Translation says it like this:

“But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions: joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

This summer we’re going to be exploring these and other “flavours” of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Good fruit grows on healthy plants. While the good fruit our lives produce is ultimately a work of the Spirit we can either partner with or work against the Spirit’s work in our lives. How do we “remain in the vine” to use Jesus’ phrase (John 15)? What do these various fruit actually look like on the ground in the dirt of our actual lives? How do we cultivate good soil in which to grow?

We’re going to explore these and other questions as we look at some of the fruit Paul names. We’re going to explore how they are all really many flavours of the one real fruit of the spirit which is love itself. You could say we’re gong to look at nine flavours of love this summer. When we root ourselves deeply into God – that is, when we grow into his very character, we begin to produce beautiful fruit.

To whet your appetite, here are some of the themes we will be exploring:

  • Cultivating patience in an age of hurry.
  • Cultivating love in a world of indifference.
  • Cultivating joy in happyland.
  • Cultivating peace in a time of disruption
  • Cultivating self-control in an age of greed.
  • Cultivating gentleness in an aggressive city.
  • Cultivating faithfulness in a rootless society.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

“Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.” Matt 7:20

These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.” James 1:15

Vineyard Himalayas Stories and Vision Night

You are invited to join us on Wednesday, July 18th at 7:00pm for an evening with Pastor Noel Isaacs. Since it’s beginnings, Winnipeg Centre Vineyard has had a special connection with the Himalayan Region Vineyard (HRV) and the work that is happening there. Noel Isaacs planted the first Vineyard church in Kathmandu, Nepal in 1995 and he’s continued to serve and lead the HRV for the past 23 years. Over the years, many people from WCV have visited the HRV churches and meaningful relationships have developed between us.

“The HRV churches have been a steady source of healing and hope in their communities.”

Noel will share stories from the region and explain the heart and vision behind this work. He will also provide an update about the restoration and reconstruction of the churches and homes that were damaged or destroyed by the 8.0 earthquake Nepal suffered in April of 2015. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear first-hand about the ways in which the HRV churches have been a source of healing and hope in their communities throughout this time.

Lillian is Retiring!

It’s with excitement (for her) and a little sadness (for us) that we announce that Lillian is retiring. As of June 1 she will be officially retired from the Bookkeeper position, which she has faithfully, diligently and cheerfully occupied since near the beginning of WCV. It is a big shift for her and for us.

Lillian, thank you for all the love and care you’ve poured into your job and those you’ve worked with. It certainly has been more than just a job for you, a fact that is evident in the extra care and attention to detail you brought, as well as your keen sense of helping our books line up with our mission. It’s never been just about money for you – it’s been about the Kingdom of God advancing. This has been such a gift to WCV. From all of us we say a big and hearty “Thank you!” We pray that you will experience a continued and deepening sense of calling, love and passion for this next stage of your journey… and rest!

Lillian has been training Vanessa Lewis for the past month. Vanessa is our new Bookkeeper and will also continue to contribute to part of the administration of WCV. Jessica Williams is our new receptionist.

A New Way Forward – an indigenous perspective & one response to the TRC

I (Andy) have had the privilege providing some leadership to Vineyard Canada’s Engage initiative for the past number of years. When the Truth and Reconciliation Commission came out a few years ago we considered how to respond at both local and national levels. One exciting initiative that has only just come out is a video series we produced called “A New Way Forward”. It is anchored by an interview with indigenous theologian, Dr. Terry LeBlanc and is supplemented by interviews with our very own Nathan Rieger and Sherry Ansloos. The purpose of the series is to explore what it looks like for indigenous and non-indigenous people to walk together in a good way. We hope this series will contribute to understanding and reconciliation in the spirit of Jesus.

A New Way Forward is being posted on Vineyard Canada’s website. Each video in the series is short and contributes to the whole conversation. Here is the intro:
